The city of Yelm is located in Thurston County, WA. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 10,617. 

The Yelm Prairie was originally inhabited by the Nisqually.The first permanent non-indigenous settlers came in 1853 to join the Hudson’s Bay Company sheep farmers.

In 1873,  the Northern Pacific Railway brought a lot of prosperity to Yelm. The railroad allowed the people of Yelm to sell their agricultural and forestry products. In 1916 an irrigation company was formed in Yelm which further enhanced their economy. Yelm became a center for commercial production of beans, cucumbers and berries]

The city of Yelm was officially incorporated on December 8, 1924.

  • The Yelm Rainier Tenino Trail is a 14.5 mile line that runs east-west through the southern portion of Thurston County and connects the communities of Yelm, Rainier, and Tenino.
