DuPont is one of Pierce County’s more unique cities with an interesting past and a promising future. What used to be a company town is now a fast-growing suburban community nestled in one of the Puget Sound’s scenic coasts. Two of the major cities along with the sound, Olympia and Tacoma, are both a short drive away through the I-5 corridor.

Access to water recreation and good schools, as well as proximity to large urban centers, make DuPont a popular choice for people who want the right mix of urban and suburban living. And because DuPont is just right by the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, it’s also a top choice for a military relocation.

The community is largely family-centric, and about 40 percent of its population (just over 9,500 residents) have small children. The general lifestyle is quite laid-back as well. After all, when you live in a city as peaceful and safe as DuPont, there’s no need to worry.

Did you know?

  • Before the European and American settlers arrived, the area we know today as DuPont was the home of the Sequalitchew Nisqually tribe. They lived here for a staggering 5,700 years.
  • One of DuPont’s predecessors was the settlement called Fort Nisqually, established in 1833. It was originally for fur trading, but its operations were later expanded to include agriculture.
  • In 1906, the E.I. DuPont de Nemours Company set up shop in the area. They were a big explosives manufacturer, with their products used in both World Wars. To house their workers, they established a company town in 1909. This town started with only 58 houses, and by 1917, growing twice as big. In 1951, DuPont was incorporated as a town.
  • To this day, DuPont remains Washington’s only former company town listed in the National Register of Historic Places where the homes’ historic integrity is still intact.
