The city now known as Lacey, was originally called Woodland after settlers Isaac and Catherine Wood, who claimed land there in 1853. The name Lacey came in 1891, when the residents of that area applied for a post office. Their application was denied originally because there was already a Woodland on the Columbia River. So they reapplied with the name Lacey, presumably named after O.C. Lacey, a Justice of the Peace in Olympia.

In the 1950s the small settlements of Woodland and Chambers Prairie consolidated into Lacey and the city was officially incorporated in 1966.

Over the years Lacey has become a commuter town for Olympia, Fort Nisqually & Tacoma.
