The city of Covington, located in South King County, is nestled between Kent, Auburn, and Maple Valley.

The city was named after Richard Covington who was a surveyor for the North Pacific Railway. Between 1899 and 1900 the North Pacific Railway built a cut-off between Auburn and Kanasakat which improved the company’s east-west route across Stampede Pass. Covington worked on establishing the line through western Washington which completed it from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Auburn.

Before the area was known as Covington, it was originally named Jenkins Prairie. In 1996 Covington became an incorporated city of King County.
